ASUS ax58u lan routing to wan or vpn

I am running Merlin on Asus ax58U router. I have Adguard on a raspberry pi for my dns and most clients use this. I have a vpn client which I want to use Mullvad so have set this in VPN director. If I add my Adguard dns to lan dns my vpn leaks. How can I stop this occurring?
