ASUS Router 16 Character Password Limitation

Why is there a 16 character password limitation on ASUS routers? Does this carry over to 3rd party firmware?

I'm not increasing it because it means going back to an older firmware or stock firmware will either lock you out of your router, or cause it to crash on a buffer overrun.

Please - don't increase it - it can cause problems with non-ACSII (non-English) languages...

I know it's a common request, but there, Asus is doing the 'right thing'
