ASUS RT AC51U - WAN Cable Issue

Hi guys

Hope you are well. I had the strangest thing happening. I bought a new RT AC51U, and i just could not get it connected. It kept on saying "Disconnected" in the GUI (Internet Portion) Although, it got an IP adress and DNS etc from the SP, I could not get the internet to connect. I also did 2 hard resets, upgraded firmware etc. Nothing.

This morning i tried again, and got the same issue. I then decided to pull out the LAN Cable (The one that connects from the router to ONT) and used the cable i recieved in the router box (Black Cable) and strangely, it connected. within a second. Did a couple of reboots etc connects immediately. The Cable that was in there worked on 2 previous devices. No problems (Cable was provided by the Internet SP)

So im puzzled? Why would this be?

Im also still checking why my internet speed is not optimal, but this could be SP related. I hope its not the cable though, as i dont want to go back to the TP Link.

Has anyone ever had this happen? And why?

This is my first reply and I hope you find it helpful.

The WAN port on the AC51U appears to be weak.

Try enabling dual wan and set the primary connection to a LAN port and relegate the WAN port as the secondary with the intention of feeding the internet through a LAN instead of the Blue WAN.

Even having done this, trying Padavan Firmware and back to Stock Firmware, I couldn't get my AC51U to have a gigabit connection.

I have since upgraded to a D-Link DIR-882 and am soon going to try a Netgear R6250.

Different quality cables and different quality Ports. Spec tolerances sometimes don't match. Has happened to many here.

What are your ISP speeds? What isn't optimal about it? What clients do you use to test it?

I mus admit, i have refunded the AC51 and went back onto my TP link C20 which was also not the best. Weird drops etc experienced. And ISP confirmed it was not the line though.

TP-Link Archer C7/A7/A9 are good budget routers.
C20 is limiting your connections to 100Mbps. No Gigabit ports on C20.

That's because the RT-AC51U doesn't have any gigabit ports, it only has 10/100 ports!

@Wikus Kruger If your ONT has a gigabit port this is likely your problem. The cable supplied with the router is probably a cheap 4 wire cable. Ironically using a "proper" 8 wire gigabit cable can sometimes create problems when connected to non-gigabit devices.
