Asus RT-AC68U remote on Asus app. WAN-connection?

My remote router often fails and I'll try the asus app, but the app can't find the router (as it not on same network). Reading a lot (google) about the app and install, but nothing about remote adding a router. One mention security with open WAN. Must I use this or can I add the router via ip and openvpn?

Using a VPN is better than enabling remote access via the app. You will need to set up DDNS. Asus InstantGuard works or OpenVPN. I have used OpenVPN to manage Asus routers remotely for years. However, if the router fails you may not be able to connect to it.
