ASUS RT-AX86U Pro > Astrill installation

Morning All,

I've decided to update the firmware of my Asus routeur and by doing that I've lost the entry for my Astrill VPN into the routeur configuration. the previous firmware was 3004 something (forgot the exact name)
After checking the Astrill website to reinstall it, I've to enter a SSH command, but I always got a "permission denied" in the console.
I do not remember how I solve (or even if I'd this one) the 1st time I installed the astrill conf.

Last version of the Asus firmware is: RT-AX86U_PRO_3006_102.4_0
I'm using Mac (up-to-date)

Any idea how to solve this issue?
It is not linked to my password (I've checked multiple times)

No, the current Asus firmware is: RT-AX86U Pro Firmware version 3.0.0.6.102_34349

3006.102.4 is Merlin firmware. And if you upgraded from the prior version of Merlin firmware it is strongly recommended to do a factory reset and manually configure the router. Do not use saved settings!

You’re right, it is the Merlin firmware I’ve updated.
I do not use saved settings.

By doing the factory reset the Astrill entry is removed and to reinstall it I need to use ssh protocol.

Are you sure this is even possible? From what I can see on Astrill's website it looks like they only support old obsolete Asus routers* using the old firmware.

Correction: Their list does include a few of the older AX routers.

The 3.0.0.6.x firmware branch is significantly different to the 3.0.0.4.x branch so it's not surprising old programs don't work with it.

SSH access can be enabled on the router's Administration - System page.

Interesting indeed.
My router (RT-AX86u pro) is also compatible even if it’s not mentioned because I did it with the previous Merlin firmware (3004 branch).
I do recall I struggled with the ssh protocol… but did not take note 😓

I've reached out to Astrill tech support, and got this reply. Pretty disappointing service for a company that charges a premium for their VPN.

Thank you for contacting Astrill VPN Support.

We are sorry to inform that the latest 3006 channel is not yet supported with AstrillVPN router applet.

While our dedicated teams are working on supporting this firmware version, unfortunately we currently do not have ETA provided.
In the meantime, we suggest downgrading the firmware to the previous version which worked with AstrillVPN applet.

Thank you for your patience.

Should you have further assistance, please don't hesitate to contact us again. We are available 24/7.

Best regards,
Astrill VPN Support
