Asus RT-N66U help

New Around Here
This thing is making me want to pull out my hair in frustration. I just purchased this last week and cannot get a good download speed for anything. I installed my new modem today (DCP-3008 on mediacom). I previously had a surfboard SBG6580 so when I bought the router I also bought a new modem..
I'm getting speeds of 20-30Mbps down when directly connected to the modem only. But when I connect the router I'm getting download speeds of 1.2-2.2Mbps.

This thing is about to go back to Amazon... I've been screwing with it for 3 hours on and off...

Well, with such minimal info and seemingly no motivation on your part to try to fix this; thanks for letting us know, I guess?

If you do want to get this working (if possible):

What firmware are you running?

How long did you leave the modem off when attaching the router? You probably want to leave it off at least 10 minutes so that it properly registers the new router.

If you have tried different firmware (RMerlin 374.40 recommended) did you do a full reset to defaults?

Did you try different channels?

Which Band are you connecting to?

Do you have different ssid for each band?

Did you change any of the defaults in the wireless settings?

Do you get the same slow speeds when connected (wired) to the router?

Flash Merlins firmware build .40 and do a Factory Reset after and I bet things will change :)

Also, what brand and type of adapter are you using?

What is Merlin's firmware??? I'm running the most recent firmware on it... I updated the firmware to 3.0.0.4.374_4561 when I first installed it.

I did a factory reset already... Still nothing.
My wireless is a Realtek RTL8188EE Wireless LAN 802.11n PCI-E NIC

My Ethernet is a Qualcomm Atheros AR8162/8166/8168 PCI-E (NDIS 6.30)

First I'd like to say that I was coming for general settings not to be harassed about not being "motivated" enough for you after spending the whole night working on trying to get it to work... I came to this forum because I didn't know much about this router and needed help.

I am running the most current firmware: 3.0.0.4.374_4561

Yes, I left the modem unplugged for over 10 minutes.

I don't know what Merlin is... I did do full reset.

I did change the channels, after doing a scan of different channels being used in my area.

It is connecting to dual band. it won't let me set up just 2.4.

I have done the same ssid and different ssids with no change in speed.

I have changed a few wireless defaults. I can't remember off the top of my head, as I've been screwing with it on and off for 5 hours now.

As previously stated in the original question, the speed tests were done on both wireless and wired through the router.

I get the same speed on other devices as well. I disabled my data on my galaxy s4 and enabled wifi and still got the same speeds.

OK I figured out what Merlins firmware was after searching the forum.. I just flashed it to the router and factory reset it again. So far so good. I am finally getting speeds in the 24-26 range! Now maybe the xbox will quit lagging!! YAY

Thanks so much r00t4rd3d! :D

One last question. Should I leave the SSIDs as something different or make them the same?? I didn't have this option on my old modem/router it was all the same and you didn't get a choice...

Thanks in advance.

It's a good idea to have different SSIDs

Hi,

The Asus RT-N66U is very sensitive about cables: :o
Did you make sure that all the router connected network cables (incl. modem cable) are at least CAT5e or CAT6 Gigabit category?

I had also some issues at the beginning, but now I am fully on CAT6 (incl. the wall cable to all rooms in my flat) and the stability and speed is just great! :)

With kind regards
Joe

Ok, so I came home today and opened my laptop. I thought I'd check the speeds to make sure they were still up there. I got a 3.84mbps down... I disconnected from the router and reconnected and it went back up to 24-27down... The only wireless settings I changed when I did this were the channels.

And the only other settings I touched were in the port forwarding section.

Other than that everything is unchanged.

I'm currently using the cable that came with the modem, it's a CAT5e, as is the one connected to the xbox.
