Use InSSIDer around your house to find the least occupied channel out of 1, 6 or 11 for 2.4 GHz (and maybe 5 GHz).
If using Merlin firmware you can just go to Wireless > site survey.

...and i've tried experimenting with the 374.35_4 build and that seems to help a little. I don't really want to use that firmware build though because for me the 5 ghz wasn't worth a crap on it. and it is missing A LOT from what the most recent sdk 6 builds by Merlin have now.
Just curious as to which build you were using as there are two 3.0.0.4.374.35_4 firmwares.
The one in the normal RT-N66U folder uses the SDK6 driver and the other is in the SDK5 driver folder using the SDK5 driver.
The one in the SDK5 folder named 3.0.0.4.374.35_4-sdk5 has the best 5GHz range over any SDK6 driver build.
It is the one I use and will stay with until I upgrade to another router.
Or you can use this, with SDK 5.110 and the latest security patches: http://tomato.groov.pl/download/K26RT-N/build5x-121-EN/Asus RT-N66u 64k/
5.110 driver is not as good as 5.100 plus the 5.110 driver is the driver that caused issues and made Asus decide to go to SDK6 driver.
