ASUS RT-N66U intermittent poor 'net connection after "ancient" firmware is updated

Use InSSIDer around your house to find the least occupied channel out of 1, 6 or 11 for 2.4 GHz (and maybe 5 GHz).

If using Merlin firmware you can just go to Wireless > site survey.

I think I managed to resolve my speed problem. I use qos and I was unaware that there had to always be a high priority rule being used for the qos to actually do it's job. So what I did is move all of my devices I have listed in the medium category to the high category and now my problem is solved so far.

I was considering switching to Tomato by Shibby firmware if this didn't work.

...and i've tried experimenting with the 374.35_4 build and that seems to help a little. I don't really want to use that firmware build though because for me the 5 ghz wasn't worth a crap on it. and it is missing A LOT from what the most recent sdk 6 builds by Merlin have now.

Just curious as to which build you were using as there are two 3.0.0.4.374.35_4 firmwares.

The one in the normal RT-N66U folder uses the SDK6 driver and the other is in the SDK5 driver folder using the SDK5 driver.

The one in the SDK5 folder named 3.0.0.4.374.35_4-sdk5 has the best 5GHz range over any SDK6 driver build.

It is the one I use and will stay with until I upgrade to another router.

Or you can use this, with SDK 5.110 and the latest security patches: http://tomato.groov.pl/download/K26RT-N/build5x-121-EN/Asus RT-N66u 64k/

5.110 driver is not as good as 5.100 plus the 5.110 driver is the driver that caused issues and made Asus decide to go to SDK6 driver.

I've read that as well but I haven't experienced any problems at all with it. I get 4-5 times the throughput compared to SDK6 at 2,4GHz.
I'm gaming alot and wouldn't tolerate any latency or instability at 5GHz. Streaming 1080p at 2,4GHz works without any hiccups.

Just tried the merlin sdk5 build you're running and got slighty higher throughput and stronger signal...

It was the 374.35_4 sdk 5 version.

I didn't mean range problems with my 5ghz band. It was having inconsistent latency compared to the other 2.4 ghz band.

It is possible that my wireless card on my pc was the problem.
