Asus xt8 mode selection

Hi all, I have the XT8 mesh connected to my standard EE router hub in wireless router mode. But I've found I can't use port forwarding as it needs enabling on both the EE hub and the Asus AiMesh. Is the best solution to switch to AP mode for the mesh? Or disable any firewall on the EE hub? Many thanks!
