Backup strategy question - RAID or just copy?

This is not really a NAS question. I just figured it might fit here.

I am planning to install a large drive (i.e. 3TB) into an older Dell T100 server that is running Win2003. I would like to keep a backup drive (second 3TB drive) for the most part in a safe location. I am planning to use a Startech hotswap drawer for the backup drive (DRW115SATBK).

My question: what is the best strategy to keep a backup/mirror of the main drive? RAID or simply do a copy of the drive every so often?

If u want to keep back up copy in a safe place, best is to do a copy of yr master. If u intend to use NAS, get a single drive NAS as file server then use normal external hdd as yr safe copy.

In this case I don't need a RAID controller. However, I am looking for some input for a good sata controller that really supports hotswap. I did not get lucky under Win2003. Is an Adpatec a good choice?

Hi,
Look at latest Antec 2 bay enclosure. It does USB3 and eSATA. I use one with Synology DS213+ Antec can work as Raid 0, 1 or two separate drives. I can plug it into DS using either port or Plug it into my PC using USB3 connection. Not made for hot swap tho.
