Bandwidth Monitor - OpenVPN question

Newbie - sorry if this is a stupid question

Running 380.58 on RT-AC87U.

If I am downloading from the usenet with OpenVPN client off - the bandwidth monitor shows the activity as download bandwidth - if I turn on the OpenVPN client the activity now shows as upload.

Is this correct and if so, why?
