bluetooth coexistence breaks esp8266/esp32

I am having a weird problem with my ESPs. When bluetooth coexistence is set to enable or preemptive on my Asus RT-AC3100 running Merlin firmware 384.11_2, esp8266 projects stop working. I cannot connect to them. They connect to the router sometimes, but only enough to get an address. I can't access a webUI or send commands to it. When I try with an ESP32, it will fail to connect completely and just set up its own AP.

I has have lots of severe problems with all bluetooth devices in my home and was so happy to finally figure out the cause, but now I cant get my ESPs working at all.

What the hell is bluetooth coexistence doing that would confuse ESPs?
