Build my own NAS

I have 4 X 2 bay nasses running, which i want to replace by building my own 8 bay NAS, using a small PC, which i still have to populate, but i have no clue where to start, do you have any suggestions for me?

First, choose an OS. Avoid OpenFiler.

Freenas is a great option. Especially if you want a torrent box and/or plex server
