Can ISP->Esxi->pfsense ever be safe?

As the title says, ISP box in bridge mode, directly connected to Esxi box with pfsense. I read that if you set it up just right, with 3 nics , one for the VM login, one for the ISP WAN and one for pfsense lan, and 2 virtual switches it is (almost) just as safe as running pfsense bare metal.

To my mind this can never be, security wise (not mentioning esxi additional setup/complications).

I'd love to be wrong though, as I want to run pfsense and dont want to run yet another 24/7 box.
thanks

You're not wrong.

Not something to experiment with on any network.

Running another box, 24/7, is infinitely a better idea here.
