What's new

Can someone please check my work? I want to use my ASUS AX88U Pro as a VPN with the same IP address away from home.

New Around Here
I am leaving my home for a year. I will have a friend/housesitter in my place during that time. I simply want to watch some streaming platforms while I'm away. My friend will also watch those same platforms here at the house. I understand some platforms block "sharing passwords" even though I'm the same user, so if I can use my phone or laptop with the same IP address that I have at home that could possibly be a workaround?

In my limited understanding, as I am not a tech person much at all, I can set up my router to do this. Using a friend who is more techy than me and ChatGPT, this is what I did and I want to see if this sounds right:
  • Enabled Wireguard and added my phone and laptop to the Client list.
  • Under Advance Settings, I have "Allow DNS" and "Enable NAT - IPv6" turned ON. "Pre-shared Key (secret)" is OFF.
  • In WAN settings, I went to the DDNS tab and activated DDNS. I used WWW.ASUS.COM as the Server and created my own unique Host Name. I left HTTPS/SSL Certificate checked as None.
That's it. I used my phone using cell signal with WG active and ran a IP address check and it showed the same as the home wifi. I did a DNS check on wifi with my laptop with WG active and it showed the same IP address around the world. Did I actually do this right or will I be sorely mistaken when I try this? I plan on going to a friend's house while I have a stream playing here at home and try to use that same platform on his wifi with WG active. I just figured I'd check here and see if there's anything else I should do.

Are there any issues, security or speed, etc that could arise from this? Basically, any unintended consequences?

TIA for any help!

I would use something other than the Asus DDNS service. It can be unreliable. I recommend www.no-ip.com They have a free service but the paid is worth th emoney.
Also set up Open-VPN server and the Asus Instant Guard. There are places that block some VPN's so it is good to have a backup.
Disable IPV6 on the router and the VPN servers.
Once you get it working make a backup of the router settings and leave it somewhere your house sitter can get it...just-in-case!

You might want to get a travel router such as the GL-iNet AC1200 Wireless Travel Router. It has VPN Client capabilities so you can connect it to whatever WIFI is in your hotel or residence and connect your phone and laptop to the travel router. All your traffic can go through the travel router VPN client to your home router.

Thanks for the reply! Ok, to make sure I understand what you're saying:
  • The $2.99 Enhanced DDNS from no-ip is a good way to go. I think I will obviously try the free Asus one until I have issues, but if I do, I will switch to the no-ip paid plan so I don't have to confirm every 30 days.
  • I would set up OpenVPN essentially as a backup in case WG has issues.
  • I turned on InstantGuard. I checked "Internet and local network" and did the same for OpenVPN. I see that it says I can create a VPN Tunnel with just one click through the ASUS Router app. So is this essentially another option vs using WG on my phone with the ASUS Router app? I downloaded the app and am having a little trouble getting past the Manage a connected router screen. It says to connect to the ASUS router's SSID. Went into the settings on wifi and connected to the router in there, but it just opened a browser to connect. Back in the app it's still waiting for me to connect.
  • When you say disable IPv6, are you referring to the Advanced Settings in WG that I have NAT-IPv6 turned on or are you just meaning the IPv6 tab in the Advanced Settings of the router itself? That one shows as disabled in the Connection type.
Sorry for the questions, but hopefully you don't mind answering!
