New Around Here
Hi,

i am on the hunt for a feature rich homeserver with low noise. Mainly i want to use the system for backups and making various data (movies, music, work related stuff) available to all devices, if possible also through the internet.
A middle sized systems with two harddisc should be more then enough, read/write performance does not need to be top notch but should be decent (100mbit network).

Edit: Maybe a one disk system would be more appropriate if i want to use it for backuping my data?

Features i would like to have:
  • Mediaserver
  • FTPserver
  • Webserver
  • Download-Service
  • User Access Control
  • BYOD
  • External connectivity like usb and esata
  • Low Noise, power saving features

Currently i favor the Synology DS 207+ and the QNAP TS-209 Pro II, the synology more then the qnap.

The QNAP seems to be very loud when the fan + harddiscs are working and also does not know a standby mode, alas i have not found any noise information about the synology. And can the synology only operate in raid mode?

I am very new to the NAS field and it would be great if you could help me with this. Its a bit overwhelming :)
Do this devices fit my needs and if yes which one is the better one? Which device produces less noise? Is there maybe another device that would top both?

Thanks a bunch!

Synology and QNAP are more expensive due to many features and higher performance. But if you are using the NAS on a 100 Mbps LAN, then you will be limiting the performance of most current NASes.

If you want BYOD, consider the D-Link DNS-321/323. Also look at the NETGEAR ReadyNAS Duo.

Thanks thiggins for your feedback! Is the Qnap much louder then the Synology?
And what do you think about the new Synology 209+? Seems to be a very nice device?

To be honest, i do not mind to pay a little more for feature richness.

Yeah but it currently would not pay of for me to switch to a 1000 mpbs network. :\

Maybe it sounds stupid but i do not like the D-Link userinterface and the netgear device comes with one disk?

Compared to the Synology or Qnap the dlink and netgear do not seem to be as good.

Sounds like you have your mind made up. Both the Synology and QNAP have low noise. I can't remember which is louder than the other.

Sorry dont wanted to sound harsh, those were just points that i found to be negative on the dlink or netgear devices. I am glad about every feedback i get :)

Do you plan on testing the Synology 209+?

Don't worry. I have a thick skin.

I just meant that in your responses it sounds like you have a strong preference for the QNAP and Synology products and don't mind paying for performance that you are not going to use.

DS209+ will be tested soon when the product arrives.

Something to think about in the noise department is the actual disk you choose should you decide to buy a unit and add your own disks. I went with the Thecus 4100Pro and the unit is very quiet when not accessing the disks. The disks I picked mostly due to price, the HITACHI Deskstar 7K1000 HDS721010KLA330, are not very quiet when writing data to them.

The Readynas Duo is very quiet (except when you first turn it on and it goes through the self test cycle).

Yes, it comes with one drive but that does not prevent you from buying a second... Newegg has good package deals on the Duo and a second Netgear approved disk.
