This isn't a 12-stream router. It is a 3 radio 4x4:4 stream router. Those extra streams are particularly useful for range and throughput even with single stream client devices.

This is the hardware I would be looking at (at minimum) for my next router(s) (currently 2x RT-AX86U).

Even better would be a greater than 4x4:4 stream radios per band. Not holding my breath here. :)
 
Yes, it's a spec game all vendors play.

You will not see 4 stream adapters due to mobile space and power constraints. There is vanishingly small market for desktop Wi-Fi adapters.

And there are 4 stream adapters. It's called a 4 stream router in bridge mode.
