There's a lot of really good single band 802.11n routers out there - the technology is very mature at this point...

Check Linksys' online Refurb store, very good prices there.
 
Thanks for the suggestion. I just ordered the WR1043D from Newegg at $39. (currently $5. off), for the in-laws*.

Good recent reviews there, and on Amazon. There was just a mid-June, 2014 firmware update. There may have been a few DOA, but they were replaced.

I'll set channel width to 20 MHz, as some reviewers suggested.

I had been holding out for an Asus N16 to load with Merlin FW, but the price is still up there. (I'm pleased with an Asus N68.)

* They have Comcast Blast 50Mbps, but their wireless connections have been slow from their leased $8./mo combo set up. I got them set up on the Motorola 6141 cable modem. An old Linksys (an improvement) is wirelessly only serving about 12-16Mbps. This should do the 1043D should do the trick.
