Client Status Name... HELP please

Where do I name the clients so they appear in status as what they are, as opposed to an random MAC? I did it at one time because some are named, but cannot seem to find that screen now.

Each client provides its desired name. The router will only be able to properly resolve the names once those clients have requested a new DHCP lease, at which point the router will know their desired hostname.

The default lease duration is 24-hours, so if you reboot your router, it might take up to 24 hours for everyone to request a new lease, and be properly recognized by the router.

I used to be able to rename them. (the ones I renamed still show up that way even after multiple updates with your super great firmware). I used that feature for identifying things like phones, ipods, etc that tend to give a very random name like android-akdfh837fjhkdhf which is useless for quickly checking to see if a particular member of the house is online.

I can do it with DHCP reservations, as it will allow you to assign a name, but a prefer not to do it with reservations unless I have to.

Now I have a few new devices, and cant find it any longer. It is a feature that is usually real easy on otherwise crummy d-link and linksys routers. Unfourtunatly those routers have to be rebooted constantly and my RT only gets rebooted when I do a firmware update.

The Name description field is a feature of Asuswrt-Merlin. It does not exist in the original Asus firmware.

Good thing I am running the fine Asuswrt-Merlin firmwware. I will figure it out, just have been able to find it so far. I think it was on a table of addresses that had been assigned via DHCP, but not sure.

Haven't used this myself, but are you thinking of the "Wireless MAC Filter" stuff under "Wireless"? There you can enter allowed/rejected MAC addresses and assign "Names".
