Connect RV042 to Switch

New Around Here
Hi,

I'm running a gaming cafe and have a RV042 which is connected to WRT54G but i don't get good speed after asking a lot people they told me wi-fi usually packets break(there is packet loss sometimes 100 packet loss even the ping goes high especially when playing Counter Strike on LAN and Dota2 online). I have one DSL and one fiber connection.
Now i have decided to wire up the whole place and i have borrowed a 24port switch from my friend but after connecting the ping is even higher.
Sometime my fiber connection doesn't connects which is through PPPoE.
Please suggest me what should i do?

should i go on CAT5 wires?

Use at least Cat5e in order to get gigabit.

Or buy a dual band router?

Not if you can wire everything first. Wired will always be faster and more stable than wireless, and wired gigabit is faster than even 802.11ac. Since you control the computers you could install really good NICs like the Intel PRO/1000 CT (for PCIe, preferred) or PRO/1000 GT (if you only have PCI slots).

As for your high pings, have you done speed tests or ping tests? If your fibre connection is cutting out, have you contacted your ISP?

Ping test:

Speed test:

Select servers close by first, then go out progressively further.

should i buy a managed switch and get the whole place wired? or buy a linksys ea3500 router. I going to chuck RV042 coz my fibre company PPPoE does not support and if it connects i'm not getting the speed here and my city most the engineer are blaming the RV042 is main cause but dnt know what a dual wan router is lol

Since your computers are stationary, that's the fastest, most stable connectivity you can get - Cat 5e/Cat 6 and a gigabit switch. Commercial installations always use managed switches but even an unmanaged switch is enough to get you started.

If you want wireless for mobile clients on your premises you can always add an AP to your wired network at any time. Don't rely on wireless for stationary computers though.

Going down to a consumer router would be a downgrade. The Cisco small business routers are intended exactly for your type of installation. I'm surprised your ISP does not support them for their fibre installations but if the RV042 does not support PPPoE then that's a big issue and could explain your poor speeds. (I don't know much about PPPoE but I thought if your ISP uses it you have to use it or you won't get any connectivity at all though?)

What does your ISP recommend then? If they only recommend and support the Linksys EA3500 then I guess you don't have a choice. It's too bad because home routers may be fine for an average household but they are not a good choice for a business with many simultaneous heavy connections like yours.
