Couple Questions

So what backup utility should I be using? I have been using a basic script that zips my jffs and does the nvram config dump for years. I see there are so many backup scripts that I am a little unclear on the right option to use now.

What is the purpose of these backups? How often do you change your router configuration? Do you have a UPS with battery backup protecting your network infrastructure?

The JFFS partition is a part of the routers NVRAM storage device. It is used internally by the router and isn't just 'file storage'. It can't be plugged in or removed either.

The JFFS needs to be fully formatted to remove any previous settings/files that are not appropriate or applicable for the new firmware.

For Skynet, copy your whitelist and blacklists in a safe place. And after doing a fresh Skynet install, import them then.

Are you using OpenVPN or a commercial option? Either way, recreate from scratch is my recommendation. Too many changes (to the VPN options) from your old firmware to the new.

You can import/export the reservations, you can search for those commands/scripts, but you won't see them via the GUI anymore (I'm pretty sure about that). Again, a screenshot or two and configured manually is much preferred if you want the same as you have now.

I don't change the config that often. I actually just run the backup before I make any significant change, before any kind of update, or just sporadically. I do not run it a lot. I just see posts about several different kinds of backup scripts, which some of newer/older and more/less complex. Just wondering what I should be using. Like I said, my current one tar's the jffs and also exports a cfg for the config.

For example, I saw one of the ones on here that mentions the option to export/import the dhcp staticlist and reservations with the ability to re-import them. That's what caught my attention.

Also, in you previous post you mentioned copying the skynet whitelist/blacklist. Where is that stored so that I can copy it? I found some of the files on my USB, like the skynet.cfg and skynet.ipset. Is that all of it or is there more?

funny you should say that...

I did a reset while back. Oddly, traffic analyser statistics from before reset remained while everything else was reset successfully.

Those stats are stored to jffs, so it obviously didn’t reform jffs like it was meant to.

Reset again and jffs cleared that time properly.

I’m assuming you’ve had the same kind of experience before which is why you recommend manually formatting jffs even after nuclear reset?
