DHCP?

I know that for 99% of the people on this forum that this question is very simple but not for me
I know that DHCP has something to do with allocating IP addresses,I think,but what exactly is it's function? If someone could please explain what it's purposes are in layman's terms I would be greatly appreciative.

You are correct, a DHCP server enables computers to request IP addresses and other networking parameters automatically from the router. Otherwise you would need to manually assign IP address information manually on each client.
