DIR-655 and remote entertainment center

New Around Here
I have a DIR-655 Dlink Router in one room which provides my internet access. My TV, BluRay and other HD DVD are in another room. The DIR-655 also provides my wireless access.

According to the Dlink web site DIR-655 and DAP-1555 will work together but the DAP-1555 has gone EOL. In looking at the DIR-1522, the "works with" tab does not list the DIR-655.

Does the DIR-1522 actually work with the DIR-655? I have seen posts, which seem to indicate that it does. Is this just a firmware version issue?

in setting up the entertainment center AP for the DVD players, which would be the better choice: DAP-1555, DAP-1522, a second DIR-655 or something else? The AP would connect to the DIR-655 via 802.11N. I would prefer to stay with an all Dlink network if I can.

Wireless access is provided by the DIR-655 Router and does not need to be provided by the access point. Only wired devices will be on the AP.

My intention is to have the BluRay connect to NetFlix. The BluRay has a built in ROKU chip. The BluRay would connect to the TV and I would also like it to be used for streaming.

Does this sound feasible? Could use some direction on this, if you could help. Thanks very much in advance!

APs don't connect to routers wirelessly. You would be using the DAP-1522 or 1555 as a wireless bridge. It will work with any wireless router because it behaves like a wireless client that connects via an Ethernet port (instead of USB, PCI, etc.).

You should realize, however, that HD streaming via wireless may not work reliably, depending on the distance between router and client, neighboring networks and other traffic on your network while you are streaming.

Netflix streams may be ok, because they use relatively low bandwidth (1 - 3 Mbps). You won't know until you try, though.

Does anyone know about the range on the DAP-1522? My router (DIR-655) is in my basement, and I'm two floors up and diagonal from it on... I'm thinking about getting this to get my ps3, xbox 360, and denon receiver online. I'm not hearing good things about it's range though.

Doubtful that any wireless router, bridge or AP is going to give you high enough throughput for video streaming at that range.

You'll have a much better shot if you can get an AP on the next floor up. One hole in the floor (in a closet, say) would do it.

I was thinking about moving the modem and router up to the first floor (comcast said I could do this with a coaxial splitter, using a coax port that the cable box uses) and using the DAP 1522, or perhaps with this now: Powerline Adapter

Do you have any experience with that?

You could run powerline from the current location in the basement.

Powerline can provide enough throughput. But it is sensitive to line noise and the type of breakers you have. See this review for background. Note that I am not recommended that product. Stick with powerline products that support the HomePlug AV standard.
