And why would you want to do that? New firmware has fixes for security-related issues. Do you not want to keep your network safe?

Yes, update to the current version or don't look at the admin screen.

Sorry, had to state the obvious.

If there truly is a need, I would bet that blocking the update site or some other workaround may be possible

Check Administration -> Firmware Update page. I've seen it there in Asuswrt-Merlin. Reboot the router to clear the notification.

Check Administration -> Firmware Update page. Just set the "Scheduled check for new firmware availability" to NO.

Since you didn't say what firmware version you're running, it might not be available. But it is there in the current Merlin 386.2
