Diversion Diversion doesn’t block youtube ads?

I'm with @martinr ... I'd rather not forward my DNS traffic abroad. There's always this other crazy novel idea... Cancel your Spotify subscription, and just pay for Youtube Premium. It's SO nice to not have to deal with ads without jumping through hoops, and you get to listen to all the music you want. :p

i wonder if blocking YouTube ads is as difficult as we've been thinking: I use a suite of addons on my kodi HTPC and the dev has included yt-dlp as an option to be able to watch trailers without having to sign in to a youtube account. I don't know how it works, tbh, but i see it's available as a community addon to my Home Assistant as well, and after a tad bit of digging, it's available in entware too. I'm not suggesting this is going to be the ultimate solution to this longstanding point of contention around here, but I'd like to suggest people like @thelonelycoder and @Viktor Jaep and possibly even @Martineau take a look, discuss and potentially put their heads together on it and see if they can perhaps come up with a functional or workable solution. Fellow furniture-clubbers who code - is it something you might be willing to take a look at?

This is not an ad-blocker as such, it's a dedicated YouTube downloader for various channels. So it doesn't really fit under the mantle of something like Diversion IMHO. But if there's already an Entware package for it go ahead and install it and report back.

I'm going to wait to see what others I tagged have to say, Colin. As always, your input/perspective is appreciated.

I'm sure to the disappointment of many others, TUBEMON won't become a reality anytime soon, unfortunately. 😋

This will not make it into Diversion. I am pleased how well Diversion works as an ad-blocker, with relatively minimal effort.
This is all I need.
Another reason not to implement it - even if it would be possible somehow - is the dependency on an iffy third party script.
I’ve had enough troubles with pixelserv-tls back then and am not going to repeat that nightmare.
I’m sure @SomeWhereOverTheRainBow will agree with me, having to rely on a third party can be a big burden on you.

The version of yt-dlp that is available on Entware might not even work since YouTube is very aggressively changing stuff on their end and yt-dlp devs have to keep up with the changes.

I would say its messy at first, especially if the third party doesnt have a very active development. I was fortunate with agh though because every user is treated as beta tester for them.

OK, Thank you. I agree, simplicity is best.

I was fishing in your waters, definitely, but wasn't expecting any bites. So this isn't disappointing...

It's not that many hoops but to each their own. I only needed to install these once and update if really needed
  • On PC or iP: use Brave or Firefox with uBlock Origin and SponsorBlock (love this so much)
  • On Android: use ReVanced (SponsorBlock integrated)
  • On TV: use SmartTubeNext (SponsorBlock integrated)

There also is this little announcement to take into account regarding yt-dlp:

That‘s exactly why I will not waste my time with a third party script. Keeping up with changes made by others is tiresome.
amtm has the dynamic LEDs on/off feature and I used to scrape the weather.com website for the sunset/sunrise time. They kept changing their javascript format. After the third time I found a way that has now been reliably working for over a year now.
While I have fun coding, I suffer repeated adjustments by others badly. I want o have fun AND peace doing work on my free scripts.
