Does Switch Chipset Model Matter?

Occasional Visitor
I just purchased a Asus GX-D1081 v3 8 port switch and I am wondering if I should open it up and take a look at the design? I see that many switches seem to die over some short time and I am wondering if I affix a proper heat sink to the chipset could this prolong its life? Also, would I be able to find data on the chip if I can read model numbers on it? Switch will be doing a LOT of 720P and 1080P streaming.

Just curious if this thing is any good or not. Thanks

Switch chipsets are pretty well wrung out at this point. So manufacturer shouldn't matter.

Biggest problem with Gigabit switches is poor thermal design. So, yes, if you put a decent heatsink in there, your chances of having it last longer should increase.

Other things that will help, drilling more holes in the case to let heat escape, putting the switch where it won't be heated by other gear, not loading up all the ports.

Ok most excellent info. Its been a while since I was forced to use a switch, maybe 10+ years. I have all kinds of heatsinks lying around, especially the kind you find in DIY memory cooling kits and old northbridge style sinks that worked very well on my Docsis3 modem. I have some Artic Silver thermal adhesive as well. Not to concerned with the warranty, mostly concerned with longevity on this thing.

Thanks for an honest answer...

I've not needed extra heat sinks in the gigE switches I have. Just don't block air vents and don't stack things that make heat.

But gen-1 switches did have big thermal problems.
