dual router system

I am trying to utilize a dual router system in my home and I'm experiencing dropped internet connection up to 20 times per day. I have a wired dlink router attached to the modem. This router is hardwired to a linksys wireless router upstairs. Is there a change that I need to make in either router that will help it not lose connection to the net.

How do you have the routers connected and why are you using two routers?
