Since many firmware versions the Administration>System page shows the option "Enable WAN down browser redirect notice":

I have tried it long ago, and out of curiosity tried again today:
  • Disconnect the WAN cable from the router.
  • Check that the router detects WAN is down:

Network clients cannot access the Internet as expected.
But no "failed connection warning page" as promissed by that "Enable WAN down browser redirect notice" feature, not with Firefox and not with Internet Explorer.
No big deal, just wondering if anyone has ever seen that feature to actualy do something, if not it can be better be removed from the GUI.

Yes that option did do something, I was pleased when we got the option to stop it. IIRC it doesn't work properly if you have changed the web gui port no or set https access only. The idea was that if you can't get to a remote web site you get the router gui to start fault-finding or setup.

The GUI port and Authentication Method is all plain default:

I guess they broke the feature down the road and forgot to completely remove it :)
