Extending a Wireless network with AP Express

I am confused about using the Apple Airport Express to extend the network.

I have installed lots of these buggers to join an Airport Extreme in order to extern the WiFi network. It kind of works but I am not overly impressed.

What keeps me wandering is the fact that when I am standing in front of the Express I still only see a relatively weak signal. Frankly wander if its not just the "original" signal from the Extreme rather than the Express.

Anny suggestions?

change the channel and/or SSID on one or the other so you can determine which one is selected.

Some say that Apple's WiFi gear is too, er, Appleistic.
