I've been away from this forum for a while and haven't logged in in my router for so long that could barely remember password (just the way I like it, means it's been running stable). Fortunately, I did remember the password at the end and was able to login. Router (RT-N66U) has been up for 57 days.

I am still on Merlin's 3.0.0.4.270.26 firmware. I don't have any 5 GHZ devices and have this band disabled in router. I also don't use AI cloud but have potential use for VPN (used PPTP in the past).

I realize several new firmware versions for RT-N66U have been released. Read through release threads and it seems some people complain about reboots with the latest versions.

So my question is: what version is worth upgrading to if stability and security are of most importance? From what I understand latest version(s) had some security fixes.

RMerlin: may I suggest including release date in change log? Thanks.

I recently rebooted a customer's router who is running Asuswrt-Merlin on their corporate LAN, with around 15 wired devices, and quite a few wireless devices (both from employees and from visitors attending seminars). It had an uptime of over 140 days (the reboot was in an attempt to resolve a VPN issue, which turned out to be a problem with no-ip's DNS servers not being up-to-date in the end).

The AiCloud security fix is definitely the biggest one in newer versions. The following features had quite a few major changes/fixes since 270.26b, so upgrading to 372.31 is strongly recommended if using any of these:

  • Large USB disks
  • IPTraffic (formerly known as Per Device monitoring)
  • OpenVPN
  • AiCloud
  • IPv6

Definitely a good idea. Not sure why I wasn't doing it, as I always did it with my previous projects before Asuswrt-merlin. The freshly released 372.32 Beta 3 has a tag, I will back-tag previous releases later.

Been staying on 270.26 for quite some time now and didn't want to upgrade since it is the most stable thus far (and there's an issue with 5GHz wireless?). Recently used HE's 6in4 tunnel, so it's good to know we can upgrade to the latest with so many fixes! We just have to upgrade the firmware as per normal right? Is there a need for a restore to factory default?

This is recommended when coming from such an older version. Feel free to try without doing it, but be prepared to reset to factory defaults if you experience wireless stability issues.

Otherwise, flash like any normal FW.

Thanks, I updated and wired seems fine. Initially it is rather sporadic, but now it seems okay. However I usually get 4-6ms at speedtest.net, but this time I'm getting a constant 9ms. As for wireless it seems quite bad. I removed the profile in win7, and tried several speedtest, and only one manage to get close to my previous speed. I am going to try a reset now!

Update: After a reset, things still seems to be the same (without ipv6in4). Yes it's really quite bad, that it timed out in speedtest. On 2.4Ghz. From a previous 30-40Mbps down and 30Mbps up, it become like 3Mbps down, 12Mbps up. The 5Ghz band is usually at a link speed of 450, but now it shows 150 in inssider. The router also seems to prefer channel 6, which is the busiest, instead of channel 11 before the firmware upgrade. I am going to restart the laptop and see if a fresh restart will fix the issue.

Update2: Looks like a restart did the trick. It now down 30Mbps and up 15Mbps. However it doesn't seem correct because the ping is shown to be 0, which is usually in the 30ms range.

Update3: Wired upload still seems to be severely lacking. I will try it again tomorrow. If it still doesn't improve, I will restart the modem and see how it goes.

Sorry to post again, I have a question. If I am using HE's ipv6 tunnel, and also a third party DNS server like Unotelly, which only supports ipv4, how can I make sure that visiting other sites will resolve using Unotelly DNS instead of HE's DNS?
