Help With Weird SSID Name Issue

I had a problem a coupe months ago. The SSID name I was using and had been using for years all of a sudden wouldn't let me connect consistently and sometimes wouldn't let me connect at all. It was running on a Linksys E3000 using Tomato FW. This problem was only on the 2.4ghz channel (the 5ghz was fine). After a lot of testing I finally decided on buying a new router. Just before I did I decided to try changing the SSID name. The old name was Mars and I changed it to Saturn. That did the trick. Everything worked perfect after that. I had posted a thread back then ( http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=10871 ) which explains the troubleshooting steps I took.

I ended up getting a new router anyway. The new router (ASUS RT-N66U) is setup with Tomato also and has been running great for the last month until now. I did not transfer any settings. I did a complete fresh install with a 30/30/30 just to keep it clean.

Well tonight I ran into the exact same problem. I can't connect consistently or at all to that SSID name. This time the name Saturn seems to be corrupt. I changed it to Mars and everything works great.

Has anyone heard of this? What could possibly be going on?

Did you delete the Wireless connection in Network and Sharing Center?

FWIW - I was on the road, and I have an airport express in my bag...

Guy next door - loud TV, loud Sex, slamming doors, etc.. basically a pain in the you know what... I set the AP Express to the same SSID as the hotel WiFi - and then disconnected it from the LAN connection. Since my AP was stronger than the hotel's for him, his laptop would attach to it, and have no service.

hehe... can also be done with various SoftAP apps for laptops - if you want to be really evil, linux can easily do this, and you can trap all the traffic, so when he's surfing alternate porn sites - trap the URL's and then print it and tape it to his door :D

evil twin stuff...
