Homeplugs with non-Internet TV

radwnld

New Around Here
Hi: I am looking into buying Homeplugs vs. a Netgear adapter for a Sony Internet TV we recently bought. I understand how to connect this device with Homeplugs; however, we still have a non-Internet TV upstairs. We were using Comcast/Xfinity for cable but only want to keep the Internet connection now and watch Internet TV. I noticed that both HD boxes have an Ethernet connection in the back - will that work to connect internet to the other TV or is that only for the service people to use? Are there other options? I'm currently using a wifi connection with comcast.

Also, I'm somewhat tech-savvy but this is new technology for me. And I'm a visual guy, so diagrams are helpful! = )
Thanks for all responses!

When you discontinue Comcast cable, you lose the cable boxes, and the ethernet on them is not active for use of any kind. Best to get a blu-ray player with internet tv apps, Roku box, Apple TV, or an WD TV live media player.

I understand that most cable STB's (set top boxes) have ethernet as an option if the cable provider chooses to use it. I don't think many do. The Samsung and Cisco (GA) STBs used by Time Warner use MoCA to do "whole house DVR", where the DVR sends IP over MoCA to non-DVR STBs to stream encrypted video. I was told that Time Warner uses MoCA instead of cat5/ethernet because they don't have to run cat5 and they don't get involved with the customer's home LAN management.

Time Warner uses their own cable system to communicate data to the STB - not my home LAN, which also happens to be Time Warner's cable DOCSIS. So TV and Internet are independent.

I note too that some STBs have eSATA and/or Firewire. Time Warner and others don't use or permit these either.
