Hot Swapping 2 bigger HDD's into my TS-251+ Raid-1 ...

Leguar

Occasional Visitor
Are now changing from 10TB to 16TB HDD's, but it seems that I have a problem now,
because the UI have changed since last time I did it. QNAP TS-251+ with v. 5.1.5.2679.

I have one by one swapped the two HDD's without any problems (ok.... it took nearly 48 hours), but that was not a problem.

As you can see in the picture (DataVol1 Management) I select "Actions" and "Resize Volume", and the next window shows the following
(Expand Static Volume Wizard), but none of these options will do what I want (I thinks), to resize the volume.

Last time I did this (two years ago), I just did the following:
1) Hot Swappet two HDD's one by one.
2) Changed the capasity from 6TB to 10TB, one by one.
3) Changed the volume to max. capacity.
Simple and elegant.

So why this problems now ??? and any help ???

QTS has changed a lot over time... you've updated the raidset, but the FS size is static - this is good, as it protects your data on the array,

Look at your "storage pool" - that might be where you grow things out.

Worst case - reach out to QNAP directly, and/or check their user forums...

The answer was posted in the QNAP forum where you posted the same question.

Thanks to sfx2000 and dosborne :)

@dosborne
You're right, and the poster over there had the right answer, so I'm up 'n running,
with my two new HDD's.

Thanks again :)

A link would make this thread complete...

I can see it. Thank you.

Dont know if the link is working.
I am in the same situation. It seems they shut down forum.qnap.com so the link doesn’t work. What was the solution? I upgraded from 4TB to 6TB dusks in RAID one and can’t expand so it thinks I am still at the 4 size. The option to expand didn’t show up for some reason. Do I have to repeat the whole one by one replacement again with the same disks?

Thank you. Looks like he just swapped each one out without using the one by one. I had a 6TB in slot one and a 4 TB in slot two. I did the one by one replacing the 4 with a 6. At that point. I didn’t bother replace the 6 with itself in slot one. So I have 2 6TB’s, the R1 is working but I can’t expand it. Wonder if I just replace the 6 in slot one with itself if that will work. Seems wierd.

Thanks to everyone. I finally managed to get the Expand capacity button to show up after the upgrade from 2 4TB to 6TB, static volumes. The instructions from Qnap are incomplete as the expand capacity option never appeared at the bottom. As noted in the solution, after rebuilding the Raid 1, you will probably have to go back to the menu and select Replace disks one by 1. At that point the expand capacity dialogue appears at the bottom and you select it. It then synchronizes the setup. This isn’t mentioned in the qnap instructions as far as I can tell.
