?How? Asus Merlin RT-N66U OpenVPN Server w DynDns?

RustyTheGeek

New Around Here
I have been using the OpenVPN Server function of the ASUS RT-N66U for several months.

Now I need the OpenVPN key that is created/exported to the VPN clients to use a DynDns hostname address instead of the IP address for client connection.

My DynDns is paid and is working.

How can I make the OpenVPN Server in the ASUS router create the client key for it to use the hostname server address? Can I use the "Custom Configuration" field at the bottom of the "VPN Details" tab to force the change?

If so, I need help with what info to type in that field. (I'm a noob on the custom scripts thing.)
If not, is there another way?

Thanks in advance for the help.

Hi Rusty, you'll probably have better luck posting in the AsusWRT/Merlin forum. I've reported the thread on your behalf and hopefully tim will move it, and/or RMerlin will pick up on it and reply back.

The exported ovpn file already does use the DDNS configured on the router.

You can also manually edit it before handing it out to your user if needed.

Thank you very much RMerlin. After reading the opvn file more closely, I see what you mean. At first glance it just looked like a large file that only contained the key so I thought the rest of the info was also encrypted.

Also, when I connected the client using that file, the IP address was all that showed up in the logs of the OVPN Client address info so it wasn't apparent that it was using the hostname. Now I see that it was resolving beforehand behind the scenes.

So it looks like I've been good to go all along. Thanks for the reply explaining things. Now I can relax knowing how this is truly working.

Thank you very much Trip! This was my first post and I was tired.
