How to add hardcoded hosts

For example let's say I want potato.com to resolve to 123.123.123.123 whilst I'm in my LAN. How can I do that? I tried adding it to etc hosts and it did not work.

Rather than start a new thread asking exactly this question (which I am happy to do if people would rather), I've tried doing the above and it's not working for me. I expect it's a formatting error, so is there an example hosts.add file knocking about? Tried searching, can't seem to find it.

hosts.add is in exactly the same format as the hosts files, e.g.

192.168.1.55 donaldduck.com

I was worried you'd say that. Time for me to have my own thread then I think as it's not working.
