what would happen if i upgraded the bootloader of AC68U to

RT-AC68P (ARM) 1.0.2.5 (US)

I read some reports that these routers are identical in everything apart from the CPU

Don't. The firmware is identical, not the hardware, neither the bootloader.

By the way, what does 1.0.1.6 have (or not have) that 1.0.2.0 doesn't (or does)?

1.0.1.6 will not allow you to overclock memory up to 667mhz 1.0.2.0 does, no more info or differences known since theres no changelog information about CFE changes to the public.
