Intermittent drops when USB drive is installed

New Around Here
Hi all, I have an issue with my RT-N66U that I just purchased. It is rock stable running both radios until a little while after I mount a USB storage device. about 30-60 minutes after the drive is mounted, the wired switch on the router suddenly starts disconnecting and both wireless channels drop... Then after a few seconds it recovers, reconnects for 10-20 seconds or so and drops again, and on and on. Seem like possible overheating? It is wall-mounted but I pulled it off the wall and exposed all surfaces so the vents aren't getting blocked and it is not having poor air circulation. It happens with both a 4Gb sandisk cruzer as well as an externally powered 1TB Fantom Green drive so powering from the bus shouldn't be the issue. I unplug the USB device, reboot the router and it is rock stable once again.

Any thoughts?

Make sure you are running either 3.0.0.4.246 or one of my builds. If you run the Asus original firmware, go to LAN -> Switch Control, set GRO to be forced disabled, then reboot.

In my builds this isn't necessary as this option is permanently disabled.
