Is a UPS essential?

On the QNAP NAS device I use, they have the ability to send UPS signals to other QNAP NAS devices.

This works well if you have two QNAP NAS devices on the same UPS, one is connected via USB, the network switching also being on the UPS.

NUT is on the pfsense router I use, I haven't tried to use that to send network messages yet.

If you have a laser printer I would advise against plugging it into a UPS, the draw it makes on the power can reduce the life of your UPS significantly. Also, if you have a laptop, don't plug it into a UPS, aside from being unnecessary, the power is being inverted, converted multiple times and is pretty wasteful .
