Is there a $100-150, maybe $300 10/100 switch with VLANs?
Better yet, 10/100/1000

maybe 8 ports?

Another suggestion might be the Netgear GS108T. They are probably one of the cheaper managed switches though. Not as well regarded as the Dell and HP switches. Speaking of HP the Procurve V1810-8G or V1900-8G might also fit the bill.

Will HP continue to manufacture and support Ethernet switches?

LOL Good question.

Based on the latest comments from the company it just sounds like they are considering moving away from the Desktop PC market. Instead they are wanting to focus more on the enterprise market. As most of their switches seem to fall under enterprise I would say yes they still will manufacturer and support their ethernet switches. That's just my take on it though.

looks to me like HP wants to bail out of products and go all services.
Considering their founders' and the roots, this is like moving to a different solar system for HP. It's sad, HP test equipment, their origins (spun out to Agilent), was unmatched.

I've worked with HP Pro Services in my job. One day, they were in pitching their acumen and wanting to team with us as prime on big jobs. I asked: If you found a lucrative services opportunity, would you compete directly with us (my large company). Yes, they said.

Increasingly Cisco is doing this too, as they feel the pressure from the likes of Huawei.

IBM - also no longer a products company.

This is not good for the US.

The new CEO Léo Apotheker that HP has is from SAP hence the push going for a towards the software and managed services end.

But anyways :)
As for which switch try and grab yourself a procurve 1810-G switch you should be able to get a 8port for around £70/80 and £130+ for the 24 port.
