Issues with 3.0.0.4.384.81049 firmware & RT-AC86U?

Hi all,

Long time ASUS router user, have the RT-N66U, RT-AC68P, and now just got the RT-AC86U. The 86U whenever I install the latest ASUSWRT firmware ceases to function and I have to use the firmware restore utility to go back 1 version and I can revive it. Trying to reset the unit via the reset button does nothing, it doesn't respond. 30-30-30 reset doesn't do anything either. The unit is my second one as the first one did the same thing and without thinking I exchanged it (slaps forehead). Both are 86U's were "Amazon Certified Renewed" if that makes a difference.

If I use the UI to upgrade the firmware it says it was successful and to manually reboot the router. When I do that I can ping the router, but I can't browse to the UI and it won't assign IP addresses via DHCP. I also tried the firmware recovery utility to upgrade to the latest firmware and I get the same result. As soon as I revert back one version it works fine.

Issue with the unit? Issue with the firmware? Or do I need to get more "serious" with my firmware upgrade process; I have never done a factory reset during any process ever and I haven't had these issues. The 86U also had settings restored from the 68 because I was trying to be lazy (I've got a number of port forwarding rules so I can access various services from my Synology remotely). The 86 is intended to replace the 68 and create an AIMesh network. My first order of business was to make sure both were updated to the latest firmware. Sending me down this rabbit hole.

Thoughts?

This is not a good idea since you also restore other model-specific settings that would be invalid for an 86U.

Yeah, trying to take short cuts backfired. I reset the 86 to default using the UI, updated the firmware, and all was fine. Then I just hard wired the 86 to an old desktop I had laying around while I connected to the 68 with a laptop and copied settings page by page, setting by setting.

Never had issues updating firmware and saving/restoring configs so I guess lesson learned this time.
