Losing ethernet connections

Since the latest release (3004.388.9_2 - was previously on 3004.388.8_4), there seems to be some instability with the Ethernet connections with my RT-AX86U.

Unplugging and plugging the cable in immediately resolves the issue, but when it happens it looks like nothing is connected to the port.

Here are some logs from when the connection just dropped:

Jun 4 08:09:03 kernel: eth3 (Ext switch port: 2) (Logical Port: 10) (phyId: a) Link DOWN.
Jun 4 08:09:03 kernel: br0: port 2(eth3) entered disabled state
Jun 4 08:09:05 kernel: eth3 (Ext switch port: 2) (Logical Port: 10) (phyId: a) Link Up at 100 mbps full duplex
Jun 4 08:09:05 kernel: br0: port 2(eth3) entered forwarding state
Jun 4 08:09:05 kernel: br0: port 2(eth3) entered forwarding state
Jun 4 08:12:33 kernel: eth3 (Ext switch port: 2) (Logical Port: 10) (phyId: a) Link DOWN.
Jun 4 08:12:33 kernel: br0: port 2(eth3) entered disabled state
The strange thing is this only seems to happen in the early morning, and when it flip flops up/down it often seems to be at 30 min intervals. Any ideas?!

1) replace the cable with a known good CAT 6 or 5e cable
2) possible crud or misalignment of the cable plug in the receptacle
3) port receptacle going bad. Try an alternate port.

Thanks I've tried these already. Also I have two RT-AC86U devices and they have both started playing up in the same way under the new firmware - with different devices attached (all cameras streaming 24-7).

Do you have anything else happening around that same time in the early morning? Any devices you are turning on? Anything else scheduled to happen on the network or in the house at the same time? Anything changed or new added to the local network recently? Do you have another DHCP server or DNS resolver active on the local network? Are you running any addon scripts?

Is this happening to all LAN ports or just specific ones? If specific one's, which specific port numbers?

As a last resort, try performing a hard factory reset and manual configuration (don't import saved router.cfg file) as a troubleshooting step. Sometimes a hard factory reset and manual configuration fixes strange issues that are otherwise hard to track down. If a USB drive is attached to the router, disconnect when performing a hard factory reset and manual configuration.

The devices connected are 100Mbit devices. It is happening on multiple ports, but also at the same time (so two devices suddenly go down at the same time). Both RT-AX86U devices are in access point mode not router mode. Nothing changed except the firmware. No regular things happening at these times. Some of the devices have static IP's configured so aren't using DHCP, some use DHCP.

I do have an addon script that runs but this is only at startup, and moves the guest WiFi network onto VLAN 200.

When the ethernet issue happens - the connectivity light on the front of the Asus access point goes out. Unplug it and put it back in and it all works again, or sometimes it just fixes itself after a few mins. Doesn't really make any sense.

As I have the same in two RT-AX86U devices, it seems more likely to be a firmware issue.

Have you tried using a LAN port on the AX86s as the link port to the main router instead of the WAN port? If not give it a try particularly if you don't need all four LAN ports on the APs.

I'm using the 2.5G port as the uplink to the access point, not the WAN port. If I use any other ports the speed is lower.

You stated that most of the devices connecting were just fast Ethernet. Do you actually use the additional potential bandwidth. In any case try my suggestion as a trouble shooting step.

Yes I use the additional bandwidth for multiple WiFi devices that connect. As mentioned the hardware connectivity lights are going out for the Ethernet ports when the issue occurs, so it seems unlikely to be anything external.

Would it be possible to temporarily replace one of the cameras with a 1 GB device to see if it has the same issue?

Are all the video cameras the same brand? Model?

roll back the firmware and confirm if it solves your problem
