Is MBIM (Mobile Broadband Interface Model) planned for upcoming updates at all? I have been told that ppp has been deprecated for newer Sierra modems and indeed I could only get my Sierra EM7430 to connect to another router by using the MBIM interface. Would it be possible for Merlin to add MBIM support by way of adding the appropriate driver? For Debian its libmbim-glib4.

No, this is outside the scope of this project.

Thanks Merlin. I guess I really meant are there any hints from upstream Asus devs that they may include it?

No idea what are Asus's future plans.
