Merlin: RT-AC68U? R7000? Something else?

My RT-AC68U is having problems: About every day and a half it needs a reboot; a firmware update and a bunch of resetting didn't help. It seems time for a replacement.

I'm using a lot of what Merlin offers, and I'm not sure if I should replace it with another AC68U, or load Merlin onto an R7000, or consider other options.

Any advice appreciated.

There are probably 3 most popular models on the marker for Asuswrt-Merlin:

1. RT-AC66U B1, similar to RT-AC68U hardware, 1.0GHz dual-core CPU, 256MB RAM, the cheapest option <$100
2. RT-AC86U, the upgrade model for RT-AC68U, 1.8GHz dual-core CPU, 512MB RAM, AES, better WiFi, about $170
3. RT-AX88U, the upgrade model for RT-AC88U, 1.8GHz quad-core CPU, 1024MB RAM, AES, AX support, about $290
