MoCA 2.0 and MoCA 1.1 interoperability

New Around Here
Hello,

I would like to know how exactly MoCA 2.0 and MoCA 1.1 are working together.
Actually I don't have any MoCA equipment in my house and I would like to know if I have to stay 'till MoCA 2.0 equipments will appear or MoCA 1.1 is enough for my needs.

Actually I have the following configuration in my house:

I want to stream Full HD movies (MKVs) to all MPs.

My actual problem is that I want to switch from 5Ghz to MoCA because I have thick concrete walls and this is a real pain in the a*s when we are talking about streaming using this frequency.

Near each MP I have coaxial port but no eth port and also I don't want to use powerline adaptors not 2.4Ghz.

I want to use MoCA equipments in this configuration:

So basically, MoCA 2 + 3 + 4 are conected through MoCA 1 which is connected to the NAS using the router.

I have two questions:

1. Knowing that all MoCA 1.1 (which can actually be bought) port have a maximum of 100Mbps, is there enough bandwidth for all MP1 + MP2 + MP3 for streaming full HD MKVs simultaneously? I assume that maximum rate / MP will be 33Mbps (100Mbps / 3 - am I right?)

2. If I will aquire as MoCA No. 1 as an MoCA 2.0 equipment in the future (400 or 800 Mbps maximum) how will work the others three?
Will Moca No 1 (which is 2.0) work at 400 Mbps and the rest at 100Mbps (and in this case 100Mbps / MP will be enough for any streaming) or will downgrade to 100mbps (same as case 1) so won't be any difference if it is 2.0 or 1.1?

Thank you!
Andrei

Review shows MoCA 1.1 products can produce 70 Mbps best case for a single stream and around twice that total (not per stream) for four streams running simultaneously. Peak rates on 1080p HD content can get into the 40 Mbps range. So you will probably be ok, but not guaranteed.

See http://www.mocalliance.org/MoCA_2/index.php.
Note that it's uncertain that there will be retail MoCA 2.0 products. MoCA is mainly used by service providers.

I have a question: If MoCA (2) + (3) + (4) are connected through MoCA (1) which has 100Mbps on port, how can that port reach more than 100Mbps (like 70Mbps x 2 = 140Mbps for multiple streams) ?
Thanks

The number quoted is for two pair of xmit/rcv streams. Each direction supports 100 Mbps.

So, my initial answer is wrong. 70 Mbps in each direction is the most you will get, not 140.

Andrei,

I have the Netgear MCAB1001 MoCA 1.1 adapters. I am not able to stream any video files that head north of 20Mbps. My saga is documented here: http://forums.smallnetbuilder.com/showthread.php?t=1246&page=11

There's no way I can stream one full HD MKV let alone three at this time. I have no experience with other MoCA 1.1 devices, so I couldn't tell you if the Actiontec adapters would work. I am patiently waiting for MoCA 2.0 devices to hit the market.

The technology is amazing and extremely convenient. I'd just like to see the bandwidth increase.

I realize your response specifically addressed the Netgear product with a 100Mbps ethernet port.

That said, I have two MoCA 1.1-based Actiontec MI-424WR Rev. I routers bridged over coax. This router has gigabit wan and ethernet ports. I see 135-140Mbps usable (17.0-17.5 MBps transfers) in each direction with a single client over MoCA.
