Hi there. I live in the UK and recently bought a pair of Netgear MCA1001 MoCA boxes. You can't actually buy them over here but I found a pair on Ebay. I had been spoilt in our previous house by a Cat 5e LAN I installed when we moved in. I had tried various WiFi configurations in our new house but I missed being able to stream full BluRay as in the old place.
Anyway we have a Virgin Media cable outlet in the upstairs room where My Main PC is and one in the living room next to my Netgear NTV550 streamer. I set up the two boxes and set them to SCAN over the "D" Band as well as the default 1150Mhz band. The setup worked but I was only seeing around 40 Mbits using windows file transfer and the inbuilt network test on the streamer.
Now here's the interesting bit... We have an old RF coax TV ariel lead in both rooms too so I connected them with F-plug to ariel connectors to the MCA1001's and set the to "All Pass" Scan. Wasn't really expecting much but when I tested, the speed went up to 65Mbits with a windows file transfer. I then set both units to the lowest available channel 4 - 875Mhz as I'd read the lower frequencies are less noisy. I'm now getting a fairly rock solid 11MBs with translates to around 88Mbits and the boxes aren't reporting significant packet loss. I know windows file transfer isn't the most accurate but the fact is I'm now streaming full BluRay with DTS-HD MA track glitch free.
I'm completely shocked it's working as I'd read a bit about the cable needing to be of a certain quality. I'm imagining the fact that the boxes are free to use the whole spectrum is helping. I just wanted to know if anyone could think of any possible problems with what I'm doing and the possibility I may be broadcasting my network somehow over the RF frequency via the TV ariel. I imagine I may be pissing off any local Ham Radio users but other than that I can't think of anything. Anyone
