Momentus XT Drives in NAS boxes.

Occasional Visitor
Has anyone played around with the seagate Momentus XT drives (preferably the 500 GB size) in a NAS box? I am thinking about setting down for a QNAP box with a few of these in it for Performance.

Any input From the masses?

I have not, but from what I have read about the drives, I think you would only benefit if you frequently use a small selection of files under the size of the 4GB of NAND flash in the unit. If what you pull off of your NAS is fairly random or frequently well over 4GB in size, you're still stuck depending on the standard 7,200 RPM drive that composes the bulk of its storage.

One thing i am really wondering about is the stacking performance of the 4 gig of "NAND" memory though. with 6 or 8 of these in an array how well would that technology work?

Putting high performance drives in NASes doesn't make much sense in many / most cases. The NAS would have to be fast enough to take advantage of the higher drive performance. And you'd need dual / aggregated Gigabit connections to get > 125 MB/s.
