moved regions: change regional max tx power

Hi,

I realise this topic has been somewhat controversial in the past, however I feel my query is legit!

I am running Merlin 378.56_2 on RT-ac68u. The router was purchased in Canada, however I now live in New Zealand. Since I am having coverage problems in some parts of the house, I have read (some of) the threads about max tx power and regional locks.

Is there a way for me to (easily) change the settings on the 68u to Australia (I assume it is the same as NZ)?

If the answer is 'no', can I revert to the official firmware from ASUS Australia site? While I really like Marlin's firmware, the coverage is more important to me than the extra features...

I'd suggest that you try out John's fork in the first instance (http://www.snbforums.com/threads/fork-update-for-374-43-available-v16e1.18914/). It's based on an older code base before they restricted the power (IIRC).

P.S. You didn't say whether you're using 2.4GHz, 5GHz or both.

Changing to the stock firmware won't change anything. The region is hardcoded in the router's bootloader.

Sorry for the naive question - if that is the case, does this mean that some of the firmware simply ignore the regional tx power limits?

Such settings are reset by the Asus firmware to the defaults which are stored in the bootloader (kind of "BIOS") of the router.

You're likely best with the CA region vs. AU/NZ... 2.4GHz is the same, but AU and NZ block some channels that CA allows, however operating in those channels might get you into some trouble if anyone notices...

Probably best to stick to using channels 36 to 48 on 5GHz then, just to avoid any potential issues with the authorities.
