Most likely because they weren't needed to keep the router operating within the specifications defined by Broadcom and the manufacturers of other parts used in the router.

Fans, by their mechanical nature, have a much shorter life expectancy. They can become noisy or clogged after 2-3 years. The fewer of them, the better you will be.

And his automobile? Booting itself has nothing to wear or tear but if OP power cycles it every day, it may stress the router, even solid state has life expectancy. Working in the field all my working like even in active war zone I never saw anything failed due to repeated boot. I have not even came across a transistor died from old age, LOL! p.s. Flash memory supposed to write/read so many times but I never heard any one saying it failed due to too many r/w cycles yet.

Just rebooted my N66U 4 times in the last 24 hours and it's still working. Guess I'll reboot it again for the hell of it.

Ha! In the last 72 hours I have probably rebooted mine about 40 or more times. Guess it's junk now. Anyone want it?

It's only since I came started using Asus router I have been leaving my router on. I have two Linksys wrt54gl and WRP400 for the past 7 years, of which I turn off every night before going to bed and power up in the morning. These two routers still working without any issues. In am still using WRP400 as my ATA for VOIP. I choose not to power off every night my AC66u just because I have USB connected which could corrupt by switching the router off as opposed to un-mounting it first.

I would prefer not to have a fan if possible fans do work well for cooling they also suck air and dirt into the router over time that will make the heat sinks less and less effective.

Convection will do the job just as well, just a tad slower than a fan.

That chip used since the RT-AC66U is specced to support up to 100,000 PE cycles according to the spec sheet...

IIRC, I read it on dd-wrt forum about flash memory aging, one mentioned after about 200K cycle it became unstable getting
random r/w errors. Also solid state device like chips, transistors
suppose to age with time. When I did rough calc. it was like
in the 20 years or more to be worrisome. Is there any one keeping a router on for 7/24 for 20 years?
