N66U Dropping connection

Hi guys,

Small issue on my RT-N66U. I'm getting email errors regarding port 993 timed out on Apple Mail. I sent this to my hosting provider to look into and there conclusion was 'It looks like the connection is being reset your end'. Now sometimes pages do completed stop as if I have no internet, but its more Mail.

I've tried 41E6, 41e5 and the official 39 but the problem still persists, also done a factory reset to no avail. Unsure if this is an issue with the firmware but I'm pretty sure Merlins 380.70 firmware never had this issue.

System logs show a lot of the following:

dnsmasq-dhcp[340]: DHCPACK(br0) 192.168.1.150 Jan 30 17:04:33
dnsmasq-dhcp[340]: DHCPREQUEST(br0

Also had this in the system log:

ntp: start NTP update
Jan 30 17:22:14 ntp: NTP update successful after 1 attempt(s)

Uptime is 5 days.

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

After a factory reset, did you use a saved backup config file to set up the router?

At first glance there seems to be something wrong with the configuration of Joshs-iMac-2 and Jamess-iMac-5.

Each device appears to have two active network interfaces connected to the router and the device can't make up its mind which one it wants to use.

These are obviously 2 iMac's using Cat 6 cables but also Wireless too for Airdrop etc. I've assigned both of mine (wireless and ethernet) static IP's and will see how I get on with that. Strange as had both connected before on DHCP and never had an issue!

Edit: Still happening with a static IP for wireless and ethernet.

I don't know anything about iMacs or Airdrop so can't really guess whether that's causing your problem.

Apart from the rather excessive DHCP requests from Jamess-iMac-5 everything else looks normal (although the syslog doesn't show the WiFi information). There is no indication that there's a problem with the router's internet connection.

Is it Jamess-iMac-5 that is experiencing the email problem?

When assigning static IP's, it must take 5 minutes for the internet to start working. I've turned ethernet off and setting up wireless, assigned static IP and Google DNs, but it takes an age to eventually start working.

I currently have this Satin assigned:

IP - 192.168.1.190
Subnet - 255.255.255.0
Gateway - 192.168.1.1
DNS - 8.8.8.8 / 8.8.4.4

Both iMac experience the same issue, but overall, all devices seem to suffer from drop outs, wether they are ethernet or wireless.

Kind of annoying as I'm certain Merlins firmware never behaved like this, I want to go back to it and try but want the updates of Johns firmware, I might have to upgrade!

Edit: Even with Ethernet disabled and static IP assigned and working to Wi-Fi, the issue still persists.

Can you setup two terminal sessions running continuous pings, one to the router's IP address and the other to 8.8.8.8?

That way you might be able to determine if you're loosing internet connectivity and where.

You'll have to run it for an extended period of time as this seems to be an intermittent problem. Check the sessions the next time you experience the problem.

I'll leave it running and see if anything comes up and will report back. Thanks for the help much appreciated

EDIT: So far 430 sequences in and there is a spot where the internet went momentarily slow, the time when pinging 8.8.8.8 ranges from between 10 - 100ms and the router also increases slightly to between 2 and 40ms also.

DNS on the router is currently set to default (ISP) and the ethernet is set to DHCP with default DNS

I will setup my BT Smart Hub 2 in place of the ASUS router to ensure it's nothing on my devices and confirm it is the router (I'm sure it is)

Update: Issue still persists. Ordered an AC86U so will see how that goes as I think I’ll wait for the AX routers to develop a bit more.
