NAS or External Hard Drive for Linksys EA6300

xELRICx

New Around Here
Newbie here with a newbie question. I purchased a Linksys EA6300 and want to adding a storage device to it, mainly for purposes of:
(1) wirelessly sharing movies/music to my Samsung tv, Xbox 360, PS3, and laptop
(2) data backup

The EA6300 is a "DLNA certified media server". My question is: should I simply by an external hard drive to meet my needs or should I by a basic NAS (e.g. WD MyBook Live) ? What am I missing out on if I don't get a basic NAS?

Thanks for any advice you can give me!

A DLNA server is useful only for media devices that cannot browse network shares directly.

Try the sharing features built into the router first and see if they meet your needs.
