Hello,

I'm currently looking for a relatively inexpensive home NAS for backup purposes. I'm currently looking at the DLINK DNS-321, the Linksys NAS-200, and the Thecus N2050UD.

I've been reading all of the (great) reviews here, and have one question that I just haven't seen anyone, anywhere, address. Namely, do any of these boxes provide any security? In the event that one of the hard drives (or the box itself) were to be lost, would anyone be able to recover the data from the box?

I haven't reviewed a NAS yet that offers the option of drive encryption. I'm guessing that it would kill performance.

I'm guessing something like the Thecus, since it really isn't a NAS, but an external storage box, would let me do that. I looked at the manual, and apparently you can set the RAID level on the box itself (switch on the back), and you then have to partition and format it from the computer.

That should allow me to create an encrypted loopback FS.

As I said, I'm not aware of a NAS that does drive encryption.

With direct-attached drives, the OS of the system that it is attached to determines the drive format/encryption options.

The latest firmware for the QNAP TS-509 offers AES 256 enrcryption on new volumes.
